Back From A MySQL Nightmare!

Finally, my MySQL databases and server are back online! It has been days and days of endless stress and nightmares.

The disaster started after what should have been a simple upgrade of MySQL server. The existing install went down while configuring to allow external connections and the newly reinstalled version would then not start as a service.

Reminder – PHP4 Running Out Of Time

In a news release dated 13-Jul-2007, the PHP development team (http://php.net) announced the phasing out of PHP4…

“The PHP development team hereby announces that support for PHP 4 will continue until the end of this year only. After 2007-12-31 there will be no more releases of PHP 4.4. We will continue to make critical security fixes available on a case-by-case basis until 2008-08-08. Please use the rest of this year to make your application suitable to run on PHP 5.”

Emergency Perl Alarm Clock

I was up at 3am last night without an Internet connection and an alarm clock

- plus cron was not working so I had to come up with a way to build an alarm clock as fast
as possible to make sure I can wake up ontime to go to work!
I chose to do it in Perl for some reason and use the Debian XMMS music player to play a good song to wake me up. Here is the resulting code in case you ever need a quick and dirty alarm clock written in Perl!

Save this code to a text file called alarm.pl…
