Malaysia: One abortion for every five pregnancies, says survey

Tuesday, May 26th, 2009

According to this article in the Star:

There is one abortion for every five pregnancies in the country, according to a random survey by several private clinics.

Sin Chew Daily quoted the Reproductive Rights Advocacy Alliance Malaysia chairman Dr Choong Sim Poey as saying that although the abortion rate in Malaysia was not higher than that in the Western countries, it was on par with the figure in developing countries.

“The highest number of abortions among ASEAN countries is in Vietnam, where there is one abortion for every three pregnancies.

“This is because their awareness on contraception is not very high,” he said.

Dr Choong said he was disappointed that abortion was not available to women in public hospitals.

“This will cause many women to delay undergoing abortion and encourage the proliferation of such services in the black market.

“Due to this reason, many private hospitals are charging exorbitant fees to perform abortions.

“Some private hospitals are charging RM2,000 to RM3,000 while some are asking for RM200 to RM300,” he said, adding that according to statistics by the police, there were at least 100 abandoned babies a year.

New Hanging Parrots - Bodoh And Celaka (Loriculus galgulus)

Loriculus galgulus - male

Loriculus galgulus - male

I just purchased two new featherd friends yesterday.  Bright green and small and chubby - they are quite comical hence the naming Bodoh and Celaka!  They are most likely Blue Crowned Hanging Parrots (a kind of Loriculus galgulus) which are native parrots here in Malaysia.  They like to eat flowers, buds, fruits, nuts and seeds apparently.  So far I’ve just tried feeding them seeds.  Tonight they can try out a fruity treat though - the uncle at the pet shop did say they like apples!

Apparently adult males are have a blue crown, red throat, red rump, and a yellow lower back. Adult females are duller than males and lack the yellow lower back, usually lack the red throat, and the blue crown is much less noticeable.  This means I think I have two males - so I’ll have to  go back to the shop and grab a couple more birds!

Last night I got a shock - I thought the birds were behaving strangely because they were sleeping like bats hanging upside down.  Thankfuly they are ok and all is normal.  These birds are the only kind of Parrot that sleeps hangin upside down!  Hence the name.

Note: Please read comments below - this bird may be a protected species.

Wake Up YB. Dato’ Sri Dr Ng Yen Yen - Leave Frasers Hill Alone

Friday, May 22nd, 2009

For a woman who, according to her blog is qualified in Medicine (Bachelor of Medicine, Surgery from the University of Malaya and a Diploma in Reproductive Medicine from the John Hopkins University, U.S.A) you might wonder what expertise YB. Dato’ Sri Dr Ng Yen Yen is drawing from when she talks of developing Fraser’s Hill.

So little does YB. Dato’ Sri Dr Ng Yen Yen seem to know about conservation in her native land of Malaysia that she seems to think developing Fraser’s Hill could be a bright idea.  Firstly I’d love to explain to her that development is generally an opposing factor to conservation and that what Fraser’s Hill (and many other places in Malaysia) need is conservation.

A unique event combining mean machines and gorgeous GT queens; bringing a truly Japanese carnival-like atmosphere and motor racing fiesta to the circuit; Malaysia will host Round 4 of the 2009 championship, which will also feature some of the best regional races as the supporting events.

To be held from June 19 to 21, Sepang hosts the only international round of the hugely popular championship, which provides a sexy combination of stylish sports cars and gorgeous Japanese grid girls. The series came to Malaysia in 2000; but SIC was made an official race as one of the championship rounds in 2002.

Established in 1994 by the Japanese Automobile Federation, the Super GT series is a grand touring car race series promoted by the GT-Association (GT-A) and recognized by the FIA. Races are held as part of a yearly series and take place on well known Japanese race tracks like Twin Ring Motegi, Fuji Speedway, and Suzuka Circuit.

SuperGT is one of the favourite race for our spectator, which mainly are Malaysian. SIC will try to find ways to make it more affordable and fun,” said Chief Executive Officer Razlan Razali.

Being it the only race outside of Japan, we are proud to organize this prestigious race.

Windows SMTP Service In Windows Server 2003: Relay Spam

SMTP Relay Setup In SMTP Service, Windows Server 2003

SMTP Relay Setup In SMTP Service, Windows Server 2003

When you enable the Windows SMTP service in Windows Server 2003 you might think the default options are secure enough. Think again. The SMTP service is pre-configured to operate as a relay server for spam! Yo have to configure it to not act as a spam relay server. Maybe Microsoft was targeting spammers when it designed its software. A lucrative market I guess.

Anyway if you do not want 300,000 spam emails running through your server a day from Taiwan (Hinet.net - http://hinet.net) that overload your server with an additional 2GB of traffic a day you better block a lot of IP’s and tighten your firewall and configure the SMTP service more tightly.
