Finally more and more tech companies and developers are dropping support for Microsoft’s Internet Explorer web browser.  Latest to stab the knife in is Google’s Wave.  According to Google:

Google Wave runs in most browsers, with the notable exception of Microsoft’s Internet Explorer (IE). Users of IE will have to download a plug-in, known as Chrome Frame to use the application.

Microsoft does not recommend installing this plug-in, claiming it compromises security.

The King Cobra caught in Alor Setar, Malaysia

The Star newspaper today reported on a King Cobra attack near Malaysia’s Northern city of Alor Setar.  Although the report did not identify the snake it is obvious from the photo that it is a King Cobra!  The King Cobra (Ophiophagus hannah) is the world’s longest venomous snake, with a length that can be as large as about 6 m (20 ft).

New Variation Of The Facebook “Immigration Scam”

You may of recently heard of a series of serious scams causing havoc with Facebook and other social networking site users.  The gist of it is that “hackers” can get into your friends or relatives Facebook accounts -  most likely by exploiting a weak password – then sending fake pleas for help and essentially money to people on the hacked accounts friend list.

Naturally with the average human being stupid, statistically lots of people will fall for this scam.  The obvious thing to do if you receive a message begging for help from a friend or relative is to confirm the authenticity of the situation.  There will even be tell tale give away signs if it is scam such as poor English if your buddy is supposed to be fluent or suspicious circumstances such as a request for an overly large amount of money or imply stories that don’t add up.

KLinkStatus is a handy web spider program is part of the KDEWebDev suite of applications.  KDELinkStatus can recursively follow and check links (both internal and external) in a web site.

Once the spidering is completed you can then export the results as an HTML report so that broken links can easily be spotted and then fixed.

When developing websites an increasing area of complexity and challenges is cross browser compatibilty.  Different web browsers (and other programs that display web content such as email clients) use different layout engines.

Yes it is a minefield!   Luckily to some degree web standards are followed closely by the layout engines – some more so than others.  The layout engines that follow web standards poorly tend to be the most troublesome for the developer (Internet Explorer).
