For a while now, possibly like many other developers, I’ve been coding in PHP using CSV related functions such as fgetcsv() and explode(). This usually works out fine until you want to read data from a CSV file and the store the data inside a MySQL database. Using mysql_query inside a loop is not fun for your servers processor!

As usual, the best way to do things when it comes to PHP & MySQL is to wherever possible get MySQL to do most of the work. Here is an example PHP script for effectively converting a CSV format database into a MySQL table. It presumes you already have a working connection and have selected a database.

Finally more and more tech companies and developers are dropping support for Microsoft’s Internet Explorer web browser.  Latest to stab the knife in is Google’s Wave.  According to Google:

Google Wave runs in most browsers, with the notable exception of Microsoft’s Internet Explorer (IE). Users of IE will have to download a plug-in, known as Chrome Frame to use the application.

Microsoft does not recommend installing this plug-in, claiming it compromises security.

KLinkStatus is a handy web spider program is part of the KDEWebDev suite of applications.  KDELinkStatus can recursively follow and check links (both internal and external) in a web site.

Once the spidering is completed you can then export the results as an HTML report so that broken links can easily be spotted and then fixed.
