Try The Opera Web Browser On Ubuntu Linux Because It Has Great Ubuntu Support

When you get Ubuntu you get firefox as a default web browser and if somehow you don’t - perhaps if you are using a varied flavor of Ubuntu you can get it in a few seconds using apt or your favorite package management program.
But… How about when you go to the Firefox website to download a copy of Firefox? This is the screen you will get…
It’s fair enough but the Mozilla site did not seem to check your user agent and offer you up a very specific software package for your needs - for example a .deb package that’s easy to install in Ubuntu.
This is what leads me to write about Opera - my personal favorite web browser. Here is what happens when you visit Opera from my system…
How cool is that? Opera auto-detects my OS using the user agent supplied by my browser when visiting the site and then pre-selects the correct download for my system. Even more impressive still - Opera offers a .deb package for a one or two click install!
You won’t even have to worry much about dependencies and conflicts when downloading Opera compared to downloading Firefox directly from Mozilla. For example a user who is on Dapper Drake should not (at least not without a love for head-aches) try and download the latest Firefox 3 because it’s not compatible - but the Mozilla site won’t warn against this!
Firefox and Linux are best friends but I maintain that Opera is a fantastic browser which is totally underrated. If you have not tried Opera yet now is the time - even if *cough you’re using something really nasty like Windows.
Opera also seems to have the bleeding edge support for web standards and has solid connections with the team who are developing the new HTML5 standard. What are you waiting for? Tickets for the Opera anyone?
