The King Cobra caught in Alor Setar, Malaysia

The King Cobra caught in Alor Setar, Malaysia

The Star newspaper today reported on a King Cobra attack near Malaysia’s Northern city of Alor Setar.  Although the report did not identify the snake it is obvious from the photo that it is a King Cobra!  The King Cobra (Ophiophagus hannah) is the world’s longest venomous snake, with a length that can be as large as about 6 m (20 ft).

King Cobras are failrly common in Malaysia and feed mostly on other Snakes, hence their name “King” Cobra.  They are though to be immune to the venom of other poisonous snakes so that they can safely consume them.  Due to the King Cobras size and temperment they are extreamly dangerous.  A bite from a King Cobra can easily kill people.  If you ever come up against one you better run away from it because the Cobra can be very fast, especially if it’s charged up in warm weather / direct sunlight.  Their defense can often be to rise up and attack.

Hopefully this Cobra was not killed but released back into the Jungle.
