Fishing Trip To Taman Tasik Ampang Hilir (Ampang Lake)
December 11th, 2009 | by admin |
The Ampang Lake is easily accessible from KLCC via Jalan Ampang Hilir. Jalan Ampang Hilir is known as “embassy row” and runs parallel to the main road - Jalan Ampang. The road is often used as a shortcut to avoid traffic on Jalan Ampang itself.
Coming from other parts of KL, the Ampang Lake is easy to reach via the MRR2 - just exit at the Ampang Point / Jalan Ampang exit then cut back along Jalan Ampang towards KLCC where you can take a road onto Ampang Hilir.
The Ampang Lake is also easy walking distance from the Ampang Point shopping mall. If you are not sure how to find the Lake - just head to Ampang Point because that’s the major landmark.
The Fish: Not sure what to expect but what I really wanted to catch were Snakeheads (Ikan Toman)! We spotted a few large ones leaping from the water and sadly there were also a few smaller dead ones. Plenty of Guppies - hardly a sustaining meal! There were also Tilapia of various sizes.
The Bait: I brought along frog lures. In case there were no Giant Snakeheads about the plan was to carry kit to try and catch smaller fish - Tilapia perhaps? Unfortunatly the small live bait - mealworms - got baked in the sun and I tried float fishing like an idiot with dead live bait.

Hi shiha,
Thanks for your comment. I’m not much of a regular, just been there a few times. The water quality is hard to judge. There is some surface oil on the water and sometimes quite a lot of litter around the lake. It will be better to check the quality using some test kits - you can get the ammonia and nitrate / nitrite levels, acidity and hardness / softness etc. Anything more complex then you will need more specialist tests
Actually I heard rumors and have read some evidence that the lake gets polluted because it used to be a mine. Poisonous gas / chemicals leache into the water. If you search on Ampang Hilir lake and “fishing” you should find the old newspaper article online - many years ago all the fish were discovered dead from poisoning.
Also - the heavy traffic around the lake will not help because rain water will wash pollutants into the lake!
For the size of the lake you can calculate it’s surface area by using Google Earth or possibly Google Maps online. It’s hard to guess!
It’s good to hear you are interested in helping rehabilitate the lake… it sure does need proper scientific care and attention.
Cheers!

Hi Jemay,
Actually I didn’t know that fishing is not allowed at the Ampang lake… I just found out the next time I went there because I was stopped by the police … lol…
Yes there are some big Toman in the lake - I didn’t catch any fish though! Can see them jump sometimes and come up for air. Probably they ban fishing until the fish grow bigger then they ask people to pay to fish at the lake or have a competition or something… Of course no one will pay if the day before that some people already caught the biggest fish!
So sadly… have to wait lar until fishing is allowed again!
Can always meet up and fish at another spot though! I like Kolam Ampang… also want to try other areas… especially want to catch some big Toman!
