Soft Shell Turtle (Pelodiscus sinensis) Photos

The Chinese Soft Shell turtle or Pelodiscus sinensis is used in Turtle soup by some caring people. It is also on the IUCN red list as a vulnerable species. These turtles as the name suggests have a soft shell and are a totally aquatic species of turtle, meaning most of their time – perhaps all of their life, they are in water. In fact out of water they can get around just about as well as a fish!
These turtles are farmed in captivity for food sources and some also become available as pets – hence the two babies I have at home in my aquarium. These guys will eat dead food or fish food but thrive on life foods such as shrimp (udang) and small fish such as guppies. The babies really like dried tubifex worms too.
