Google Wave Puts Pressure On Microsoft By Dropping Support For IE
September 30th, 2009 | by admin |
Finally more and more tech companies and developers are dropping support for Microsoft’s Internet Explorer web browser. Latest to stab the knife in is Google’s Wave. According to Google:
Google Wave runs in most browsers, with the notable exception of Microsoft’s Internet Explorer (IE). Users of IE will have to download a plug-in, known as Chrome Frame to use the application.
Microsoft does not recommend installing this plug-in, claiming it compromises security.
Cough cough… so any product that leaves your product behind to gather viral infested dust is a security threat eh? Just by booting into windows and connecting to the Internet you are commiting the biggest act of insecurity known to mankind.
Google’s latest blow to Microsoft is confirming much of what I’ve been observing over the last 6 months. Developers and rivals to Microsoft are less afraid in 2009 to break away and drop support for Microsoft’s projects. Developers are sick and tired, especially of Internet Explorer. The fact is Microsoft is getting left far behind and people are less and less willing to support what is essentially legacy or inferior software.
I am starting to roll out some major changes myself – changes that I would not have considered 6 months ago. Stopping all support for IE versions less than 7 or possibly even IE 8! The simple fact of the matter is the vast majority of computer users are novices and pretty low on the old techno-IQ levels. The only way to help end users enjoy the latest and greatest innovations is to cut support for the software which is holding innovation back. For me, I think now is a good time to really try and get rid of IE once and for all.
