Changing IP Address Of A Windows Web Server (IIS6)
November 4th, 2009 | by admin |
When you move a Windows server to a new IP address there are two major settings you will have to configure on your server in order for your web sites and email to function.
Once you have updated the AName records with your domain name provider to point to the new IP address you can begin reconfiguring the server. Firstly you will need to make sure that each web site is set to the correct new IP – this is done either in IIS Manager or in the Computer Management MMC.
Remember to change the IP for each and every sub domain, including the regular www. You should not need to restart IIS in order for the changes to take effect – just apply the settings.
Next you will need to reconfigure the IP address for the SMTP server.
The settings for the SMTP server can be found via the Computer Management MMC. Right click on the Default SMTP Server or similar and then select properties. Once you have set the IP address correctly for each domain and the SMTP server your web and email should be working as expected. If you are serving databases to remote clients remember you may have to update the clients with the new server IP address so that they can connect properly. If you were using FTP to connect to the server using it’s IP or using an RDC to manage the server remember also to update the clients with the new IP address.
This info is good for IIS6 on Windows 2003 Server. Settings might not be the same on other Windows / IIS versions.
