Disable Windows Vista Sleep Mode | Stop Windows Vista From Falling Asleep

Self explanitory Windows Vista vs Linux

If you are unlucky enough to use Windows Vista, by default it seems to be set to fall asleep after a period of “inactivity“. However it is not really sure if it is inactive or not because it was developed by Microsoft hence oftentimes it falls asleep when you have left the computer busy doing something or – waiting to do something.

By allowing Windows Vista to fall asleep you could cause files to become corrupted during data transfers or your system may be unavailable on a network. It’s also not a good idea to leave a computer to it’s own devices. Would it not be better if a system went to sleep when it’s told to do so and not when it thinks it should?

Follow these instructions to disable Windows Vista sleep mode…

  • Control panel » system and maintenance » power options
  • Select “change plan settings
  • Select “change advanced power settings

Also set the hard drive(s) to shut off – “never”.

If you have a spare 2 hours backup your persoanl files then download a flavour of Ubuntu (I’d recommend http://kubuntu.org) and install it on your system.  You will then no longer need to lookup tutorials on how to get around annoying and weird things that Microsoft products are doing on your computer systems :)

    Hi Wood Windows,

Sure you tried to disable sleep mode properly? Run Windows update?

Really? – a bug that causes Vista to sleep. It couldn’t get much worse really – unless Vista shuts itself down and deletes all of your data. We can put that one in a feature request for the next version of Windows :)

Did you find a fix for the bug? Or do you just update Windows to fix it?

    cheers!
